Beyond Statues: Monuments Visioning Workshop

  • University of Kentucky, Gatton Student Center 160 Avenue of Champions Lexington, Kentucky, 40508 United States (map)

Join Monuments Across Appalachian Places and the University of Kentucky's Monuments Workshop, at the Beyond Statues: 2026 Conference on September 12, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm ET. MAAP will host a two-hour workshop designed to support groups from across Central Appalachia interested in submitting proposals for MAAP grant funding, due October 13, 2026. Pre-registration is required, and eligible applicants will receive stipends for their participation.

The workshop will offer training and support in grant writing for monuments: developing community-based and trauma-informed approaches to commemoration, preparing budgets, re-imagining physical installations, troubleshooting the feasibility of projects, and planning digital archive work and oral history collection and preservation. Successful MAAP proposals will receive grants for between $50,000 and $350,000 to create new monuments in Appalachian Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, or West Virginia during 2027-2028. Workshop participants are not guaranteed MAAP project funding, and applicants for monument project grants are not required to attend a Workshop to be eligible for funding.

Registration is open until Aug. 30th. Visit the conference website for more information and registration. Beyond Statues: 2026 Conference | The Monuments Workshop.
