As the first year of the Monuments Across Appalachia project draws to a close, we look back on some amazing accomplishments. In simple terms, we've identified four projects to fund in Round 1 (announcements coming shortly!), we're waiting for Round 2 proposals, and we've laid the groundwork for honoring the many stories of social justice that are often unknown or unheard. Behind the scenes of all this work is an amazing team of people. From interns, to graduate students, to advisory board members, to consultants, to communications and engagement specialists, to a postdoc, to the leadership team...there are many people who are committed to MAAV and the work of communities striving to make their stories known. We have so much to do and in some ways, the best is yet to come as we select remaining projects, unveil new monuments, and gather together to share these stories. But in other ways, this first year of meetings, planning, phone calls, drafts and revisions, budgets, and negotiations has offered us a chance to solidify our commitments, to articulate MAAV with communities, and to look forward to the next two years of implementing projects with determination and resolve. We'd like to thank everyone working with us and we look forward to seeing you at the variety of upcoming MAAV events in 2024 and 2025!
